Search engines attempt to measure the quality and uniqueness of a website’s content. One method they use to do this is to evaluate the document itself. For example, if the website has a lot of spelling and grammatical errors, the engine takes this as a sign of poor editorial effort. Search engines might also try and analyse the reading level of the document. They can look at the average word and sentence length to determine the level of education needed to understand the site. They also measure the user interaction on a website. If, for example, large numbers of visitors, having clicked on your site, immediately leave and return to the search engine this would be a strong indicator of poor quality.
